According to the Airtime Publishing book on the F-14, four USMC Squadrons were originally going to transition to the F-14A. VMFA-531 was to be the first, followed by VMFA-451, then VMFA-122, then one more. 531 was actually in the middle of ground school at NAS Miramar, with pilots, RIOs, and maintenance people learning the F-14, when the USMC Commandant cancelled the Marine Tomcat program to free up funds for the AV-8B and the F/A-18. There were a lot of angy Jarheads in the Miramar O-Club that night, I would imagine, and it's probably a miracle that place was left standing. Several of 531's pilots and WSOs, though did finish the transition, and served exchange tours with the Navy. And yes, Grumman did produce a patch:

Trochę poszperałem w necie, oficjalne treści przedstawiają sprawę tak, 14 sierpnia 1974 dywizjon VMFA-122 stał się pierwszym dywizjonem wyposażonym w F-14A. Oficjalna strona MAG-31 nie mówi jednak kiedy podjęto decyzję o tym kiedy zrezygnowano z Tomcatów. Nieoficjalne źródła mówią że Tomcaty z VMFA-122 widziane były na ćwiczeniach w Camp Lejuene w 1973 roku

 

Na wiosnę 1975 roku dywizjon VMFA-531 bazujący w MCAS El-Toro został przebazowany do MCAS Beaufort (gdzie bazował VMFA-122) i stał się 2gim dywizjonem wyposażonym w Tomcaty. 29 sierpnia 1975 Grey Ghosty powraciły do El Toro i przesiadły się na F-4J.

 

Wynika z tego że pierwszy dywizjon (VMFA-122) latał przez rok na Tomcatach.

 

Czy możliwe jest że Tomcaty używane przez Grey Ghosty mogły wyglądać tak:

Źródła na które ja natrafiłem (linki poniżej), wspominają jedynie o przerwanym szkoleniu naziemnym personelu Marines przygotowywanego do przyjęcia Tomcatów.

 

 

Ale popuszczając wodze fantazji i idąc dalej tym tropem, można by spreparować takie kociego what-if'a

In 1974, the Marine Corps prepared to stand up VMFA-122 at NAS Miramar, but the program was cancelled when the Marine Corps decided to retain modified versions of the dependable F-4J Phantom II.

On August 14, 1974, VMFA-122 was placed in a cadre status in anticipation of becoming the Marine Corps’ first F-14A squadron. With the decision not to accept the Tomcat into the Marine Corps inventory, VMFA-122 was reactivated at MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina and refitted with the F-4J in September 1975. On September 25, 1985, VMFA-122 flew its last F-4 sortie, completing 20 years of service as a F-4 “Phantom” squadron.

I was in the Marine Tomcat program in 1975 and was at NAS Miramar, Ca. VMFA-122 was to be the 1st squadron. We were canxed July/Aug,1975.

The T-2C and F-14 did not belong to the Marine Corps even though a few T-2's wore MARINES on the side and the F-14 flew with the markings of VMFA-122.

Testowaczem maszyn, albo jak sami o sobie piszą i mówią "zajmowali się ujeżdżaniem" był VF-101, nie mniej w latach 70-tych tę rolę pełnił VF-124 - tu bym szukał śladów z załogami Marines.

 

Ślad ze stronki Torstena Anfta cyt.: December 1973 saw Marine Corps officers report to VF-124 to start training as instructors. Marine Corps involvement continued until mid 1976, when the Corps finally decided the F-14 was too expensive for its needs, ending their requirement for aircrew trained on the type.
